Asbestos was used in hospitals as lagging material for pipework and boilers.
Those responsible for initial construction were exposed as were those involved in maintenance and repairs. Caretakers who looked after the boilers could be present when contractors carried out the removal and replacement of lagging on pipes and boilers in the boiler rooms.
Other men were exposed working on pipework in other areas of the hospital and it was common for pipework to be located in underground service ducts which meant that men were working in very confined spaces.
