Men involved in both ship repair and ship building were exposed to asbestos. This included not only the laggers or carpenters who used asbestos in the course of their own work, but also other trades working around them eg general labourers, electricians, riggers, welders and platers.
Men were generally working in confined spaces in circumstances where there was pressure to work as quickly as possible alongside one another to complete a job.
